Using Technology to teach…

March 12th, 2010 by joshualim

Having gone to my first jazz piano lesson with Mr. JM, King of Swing, i realised that he is one educator who understand the value of Technology. Armed with an iPhone, he asked me to use my iPhone to record my piano lesson, using metronome app to practise with, and burning minus 1 cd to play along to Professional Musicians. Impressed i am!  :)

in MusicTEC centre, students will understand in the long-term why using technology is helpful. In fact, it is a must-have tool in learning. Even in MOE schools, i have heard from friends that using fb to enhance learning is already taking place.

myself, i use garageband to do my band’s recording.

enjoy! www.soundcloud.com (search for tppsg)

(it will be useful if you are teaching NT Syllabus and if you do enjoy acoustic worship) aint pro here… am still moulding my craft weekly  =)

how do i teach my student?

March 10th, 2009 by joshualim

There is this poster in one of musictec edu-centre’s room, teach the child in the way he/she learns…Somewhat true :D speak the language of the child, and he/she will understand you…

Teachers have a responsibility to teach, not just imparting knowledge but rather, nurture and groom, setting a role-model example to our students. Teach them how to “fish” and let their creativity and imagination teach us teachers.

I am amazed at my student Jin Hean’s attitude towards piano lesson, i am pleased to see my students improve on their sight-reading. When i know that my students can sight-reading, they are already “fishing” for themselves…

Sometimes…friendships with students are much more important than grades… do you agree?

Mr Holland’s Opus

January 4th, 2009 by joshualim

Inspiring, moving & hard warming, a must-watch by all music teachers… pretty long movie for a one seating, so i took it into two halves… the movie shows what a music teacher goes thru and most of the time we teachers too get frustrated and just stop at the problem, very seldom we blame ourselves for not sourcing the appropriate solution for the problem itself - the student. Definitely, i can relate myself with Mr Holland at sections of the movie; but not to the extent of conducting… wahaha… piano teaching is enough for now… teaching one student after the other is like “factory production”… back in my days in other music school, it felt that way…just training students for piano exams…BORINGGGG…anyway, anyone who would like to borrow the dvd, it is a must watch, and do take time to reflect each time a new chapter starts… each chapter, there is a title which describes what that section of the movie is about… this line strikes me the most, Mr Holland said, “i will use and do whatever it takes in order for me to teach that class.” not easy, really not easy… to me, it is “knowing your student as your piano teacher has known you”. Teaching music notes is easy, teaching to inspire is never easy. Lastly, be yourself; never belittle what lies inside each one of u :D :D :D  movie review by js.lim

my teaching philosophy - part I

December 3rd, 2008 by joshualim

enjoy teaching, because by teaching, i learn; find the joy in teaching, find the joy in the child u are teaching not because i am paid by teaching, not to achieve good grades for the students, not just to see the smile & joy on parents’ faces, but the legacy that i leave behind to each and everyone of my students to feel & remember. The only thing i can pass on to my students are memories.

each child is different, each teacher is different; i tell my students’ parents that i am no miracle teacher; only hoping that my student will feel patience, care & love
